Exam 4 review on the range, Sunday morning 19 April 2015
Overview
Negril Tactical Shooting Range (NTSR) hosted their first IPSC Level 1 Range Officer
(RO) Seminar over the weekend of 18-19 April 2015. The event was coordinated by
range director Christine Green, with classroom held on Saturday at the Hotel
Commingle in Savanna-La-Mar, and Sunday was spent on the range at NTSR. Printed
materials were provided by the Jamaica Rifle Association, with some additional copies of
exams made at the Hotel.
A total of twenty two (22) participants attended the seminar, including one (1) member
of IPSC Cayman Islands and three (3) members of the Dreamek Shooting Range (DSR)
in Montego Bay.
Background
NTSR affiliated with IPSC Jamaica through the JRA in April 2014, with some fifteen (15)
of their members added to the IPSC national register of practical shooters. NTSR is also
affiliated with the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) as a Foreign
Classifier Affiliate club (FCA-42), and has held the Todd Jarrett Classic match in
December 2014 under USPSA rules.
Travel & Accomodation
My wife Tanya and I travelled to Sav-La-Mar by road EARLY Saturday morning, leaving
Kingston 04:45am and arriving at the Hotel Commingle at 07:45am. Christine provided
overnight accommodation for us at her home in Cave on Saturday night, we were made
to feel completely at home – ask her about “mixology”, she is a Master!
First Day
The classroom training was held in an event space in the hotel, which was very
comfortable and properly equipped with multimedia projector & screen, meals
(Breakfast and Lunch provided), good tables and comfortable seating.

The seminar began shortly after 8am with a brief introduction and prayer by Christine,
and then we started with a full Jamaican breakfast – not just coffee, I mean callalloo,
ackee and saltfish, fried dumplings, banana, orange juice….. the whole thing!

We were able to proceed through Day 1 classroom presentation including exams 1 to 3,
with only a brief pause for lunch. Additional presentation material from Day 2 was also
covered, including targets and scoring issues.
Classroom training completed around 6pm. Exam 7 had previously been circulated to
most participants by email, a few additional copies were handed out to others.

After training, that evening we met for dinner at a roadside bar & restaurant, and
enjoyed some really good roast conch, roast fish, roti and of course a Red Stripe to
wash it down! The mosquitos were not too bad, but Christine had a plan for them too.…

Second Day
Classifier CLC-15 set up on Bay 1
We resumed at the NTSR range on time with all present, beginning with Exam IV on
schedule. The focus was on handgun elements of the seminar, and we carried out a
practical classifier level 1 match activity (including CLC-5 and CLC-15) through until just
after 1pm. I had brought range materials from JRA including 2 IPSC Poppers, 8 target
stands and uprights, IPSC box, stapler, and several IPSC & USPSA targets.
The classifiers provided good exercise in Stage Management including use of IPSC scoresheets.

Finally, on completion of Exam VII and the seminar, we were done by around 1:30pm!
Tanya I were presented with a gift from Christine on behalf of NTSR. We reloaded the
JRA range materials, said our farewells, and Tanya and I proceeded home arriving back
in Kingston just before 7pm.
Summary
The Negril Tactical Shooting Range (NTSR) is ready to hold IPSC matches in accordance
with required standards. Their members have good talent and experience to build on,
and are very enthusiastic about the sport. The range currently has 11 bays, and can
easily accommodate a 12-stage IPSC Level 3 event, which is something we will discuss
further with Christine. In the interim, we encourage NTSR to hold IPSC level 1 matches
(ideally less than 50 rds maximum each, including a classifier stage). We will continue
to remain in regular contact and share information, and will maintain an open invitation
to NTSR members to attend our practical shooting events at the JRA as competitors and
Range Officials.
The participants from the Dreamek Shooting Range (DSR) in Montego Bay
are encouraged to get their range affiliated with IPSC as soon as possible, to
properly incorporate them and their matches into IPSC Jamaica.
“Onwards and Upwards!”
